Starting at the turbo discharge, the downpipe bolts up with a CNC machined turbo flange. A slight expansion to the stock turbo outlet allows exhaust gases a smooth transition to the 3" piping. Two slight bends allow the body of the downpipe to clear the heatshields, power steering rack, and quattro transmission. A stainless steel flex section accurately placed allows for engine movement. 42's signature adjustable 3-bolt flange finishes up the first section of the downpipe, allowing for precise adjustments in fitment. Next a Magnaflow cat bolts-up and piping makes an S-bend to meet the stock exhaust location. An adaptor is used to allow bolt-on fitment to any stock or aftermarket cat-back. The whole system bolts together with grade 5 hardware and triple layer gaskets. Mechanical locking nuts are used to ensure the downpipe never comes loose.
42's 3" downpipe upgrade has been designed to squeeze all available power from a street or track driven TT. Power increases can be felt instantly after installation. Midrange and top end power increases dramatically while almost no low end power loss is felt. Boost builds steadily without a major spike in pressure. On the smaller K03 turbo cars power increases are maximized by additional modifcations (intake, cat-back exhaust, N75 valve, etc). Since the 1.8T's initial release by VW in 2000, it has been proven time and time again that 3" downpipe upgrades provide healthy power increases on all 1.8T motors.
This 3" downpipe upgrade is available in two configurations - street or race. Street series downpipes include a high-flow cat. Race series downpipes include a test pipe. Test pipes and cat sections are available separately for those who wish to change at a later date. Thanks to a modular flange design the cat can be easily removed on race day and reinstalled for street use.
Starting at the final flange of the downpipe, 42's 3" cat-back bolts up without modification using locking hardware and a double layer graphite gasket. A slight 3" mandrel bend tucks a straight-through resonator into the heatshields away from road debris. A stubby hanger and a series of mandrel bends routes 3" tubing under the rear suspension to a CNC machined adjustable flange connection. Exiting the flanges, tight radius 3" mandrel bends allow exhaust gases to enter the rear muffler. Inside the rear muffler exhaust gases are divided into an opposing pair of 2.5" outlets. Tight radius bends and precision hangers position two stainless steel tips perfectly in the rear bumper.
At idle, the TT emits a suggestive rumble. At low rpms and cruising speeds the sound is sporty and refined. The exhaust opens up at full throttle and high rpms with a powerful tone and not a hint of rasp. Inside the car, the shape of the hatch and rear end design naturally amplify exhaust sound. With the rear seats installed the volume is minimal and the system does not drone. During testing 42 experimented with various resonator and muffler combinations before finding the perfect balance of power and sound.
Installation is simple, adjustable, and reliable. A permanent flange allows the system to bolt to 42's 3" downpipe. Precise design and fabrication routes piping clear of heatshields. Adjustable flanges allow further adjustment if necessary, sealed by double layer graphite gaskets and locking hardware. A pair of collars on each rear hanger lock the muffler in place. This means your tips will never slide out of place.
